Picis Strengthens Position as Market Leader in Emergency Department Systems with Significant Hospital Signings in Fourth Quarter

Interoperability with Siemens and other major hospital information systems drives customer adoption

WAKEFIELD, Mass.
— Feb. 17, 2009 —Expanding its market share leadership in Emergency Department Information Systems (EDIS) and ED revenue management solutions, Picis increased its emergency department (ED) customer base with the addition of several new and expanded agreements with North American health systems during the fourth quarter of 2008.

The company signed new business agreements with Alegent Health in Nebraska and Iowa; Northwest Hospital & Medical Center in Washington; Palisades Medical Center in New Jersey; Physician’s Choice Hospital in Ohio; and St. Rose Hospital in California. In addition, Inova Health System in Fairfax, Va., one of the largest EDIS implementations in the country, extended its use of Picis to several additional facilities. These prestigious health systems selected Picis ED PulseCheck® as their core EDIS, with many also choosing Picis LYNX revenue management solutions for comprehensive clinical documentation and optimized charge capture, reimbursement and compliance.

Picis ED PulseCheck, part of the CareSuite® family of high-acuity solutions, helps hospital administrators better manage profitability, patient flow and efficiencies in the ED, while at the same time providing clinicians with the information they need to deliver high quality patient care. By combining comprehensive clinical documentation with Picis LYNX point-of-care revenue management solutions and providing interoperability with every major hospital information system, Picis ED solutions now manage an estimated 28 million ED patient visits each year – more than any other vendor.

Highlighted agreements in the fourth quarter:

  • Alegent Health, Neb. — The largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare system in Nebraska and southwestern Iowa selected Picis ED PulseCheck to leverage the software’s easy-to-use nursing and physician documentation, and risk management linked with the system’s Siemens Medical Solutions USA Soarian® information system. Providing a streamlined and automated patient care process, Picis ED solutions can not only improve clinical documentation, but also promote charge capture of ED services, thereby providing a strong return on investment. An existing Picis customer, Alegent Health intends to use ED PulseCheck’s features – including InSight ED™ patient chart rules and charge rules – to sustain the healthcare system’s top quality scores and promote excellence in Core Measures compliance. This multifacility agreement includes the following hospitals: Bergan Mercy Medical Center, Lakeside Hospital, Midlands Hospital, Immanuel Medical Center and Memorial Hospital in Nebraska; as well as Mercy/Corning Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital and Mercy Hospital in Iowa.

"Every decision we make at Alegent Health is driven by our commitment to providing the highest quality of care for the body, mind and spirit of every person who comes through our doors,” said Wayne Sensor, president and chief executive officer, Alegent Health. “By streamlining several complex processes in our busy emergency departments, the Picis system allows our doctors and nurses to spend less time charting and more time caring for their patients – without compromising safety.”
  • Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, Wash. — This superior facility, which ranked among the top five percent of hospitals in the United States for patient safety, selected Picis ED PulseCheck to increase patient throughput, gain efficiencies and improve communication between caregivers. The hospital plans to implement ED PulseCheck’s physician and nursing documentation, InSight ED™ patient chart rules, to provide clinicians with quick access to patient information, enhanced risk management and interoperability with the hospital’s Siemens Soarian® system. By combining Picis LYNX revenue management solutions, which the hospital has used for more than 15 years, with PulseCheck’s clinical documentation, Northwest aims to provide complete accuracy and compliance of charting and charge capture for ED services.

  • Palisades Medical Center - NewYork Presbyterian HealthCare System, N.J. — This first-time Picis customer plans to deploy Picis comprehensive ED solutions as part of a multidisciplinary decision to use the tools to improve service delivery and clinical documentation for the hospital. Picis’ proven integration experience with more than 50 hospitals using the Siemens hospital information system was an important factor in the selection.

  • Physician’s Choice Hospital, OH — This brand-new hospital formed by three experienced emergency physicians and scheduled for opening in 2009, selected Picis’ Web-native information system, ED PulseCheck, to provide ease of use in electronic physician and nursing documentation, integrated risk management and support of this forward-thinking facility’s emergency needs.

  • St. Rose Hospital, Calif. — The hospital plans to drive increased accuracy and efficiency of ED operations by implementing ED PulseCheck clinical documentation with optimized facility charging and compliance provided by Picis’ LYNX E/Point® facility charging solution. In addition, St. Rose Hospital plans to use Picis Business Transformation Services to incorporate best practices into the implementation, as well as to optimize its ED automation efforts and physician adoption to meet the business needs of the hospital.

“Along with our quality initiatives, we anticipate positive results with these applications to help improve the efficiency and care we provide to our patients. In a busy ED, it is critical to have the tools in place to help support decisions and track our outcomes,” said Dr. Armando Samaniego, medical director, St. Rose Emergency Services.

  • Other Expanded ED Contracts include: Catholic Medical Center, N.H.; Decatur Memorial Hospital, Ill.; Daughters of Charity Health System, Calif.; Exempla Healthcare, Colo.; Hunterdon Medical Center, N.J.; Inova Health System, Va.; Riverside Regional Medical Center, Va.; Rockford Health System, Ill.; University of Colorado Hospital, Colo.; and Virtua Health, N.J. These health systems have expanded their use of Picis technology to bring ED PulseCheck to additional facilities, to introduce InSight ED (customizeable rules for patient chart charges and the department) to a facility, and to add LYNX solutions for enhanced revenue management of the ED.
