Picis Extends Market Leadership with New ED PulseCheck Signings

Successful interoperability between EDIS and major hospital information systems, anticipation of ARRA drive customer adoption

WAKEFIELD, Mass.— December 1, 2009 — Picis, the market-leader in emergency department (ED) solutions, announced today that in the last two months several major medical centers have selected Picis ED PulseCheck®, the company’s emergency department information system (EDIS), to drive results in this critical area of their hospitals. Scottsdale Healthcare, Antelope Valley Hospital and Bayonne Hospital Center, just to name a few, have selected Picis’ comprehensive ED solution to increase accuracy and ease of use in the ED, while promoting continuity of care by clinicians and interoperability of patient records across the organization. ED PulseCheck has repeatedly proven its ability to interoperate with every major hospital information system (HIS), while meeting the needs of this uniquely-demanding environment.

ED PulseCheck, part of the CareSuite® family of high-acuity solutions, was designed by ED physicians and nurses to be the most comprehensive and user-friendly emergency department software available. ED PulseCheck delivers tangible results to hospitals by helping them to improve operations, drive advanced quality initiatives, improve patient satisfaction and recover revenue in the ED. In today’s world, where federal stimulus funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) HITECH is tied to meaningful use, adoption is key, as are physician adoption, speed and ease of use.

Recent Hospitals Adding or Extending their Use of Picis ED PulseCheck include:

  • Scottsdale Healthcare — Following the successful implementation of Picis LYNX E/Point® revenue management solution in 2008, Scottsdale Healthcare recently selected Picis ED PulseCheck to automate clinical documentation in its three hospitals in Scottsdale, Arizona, while interoperating with McKesson Corporation’s HIS. By closely tying clinical documentation in ED PulseCheck with E/Point’s coding and charging for ED services, Scottsdale Healthcare is positioned to optimize revenue as well as quality of patient care. The facilities deploying ED PulseCheck are Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center, Scottsdale Healthcare Shea Medical Center and Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak Hospital.
  • Antelope  Valley Hospital — This 420-bed medical center in California has one of the busiest EDs in the state — with more than 100,000 patient ED visits a year. Antelope Valley has indicated that it is deploying ED PulseCheck because of its ease of use in a busy setting, comprehensive ED information management and its demonstrated integration with the McKesson Corporation HIS. The hospital has also chosen to use ED PulseCheck’s InSight ED™ patient chart rules to better manage the department, and InSight ED facility charge rules and professional charge rules to improve clinical documentation, as it relates to billing and charging.
  • Catholic Health East (CHE) — This 25-hospital health system has chosen to deploy Picis’ end-to-end clinical and revenue management solution at three of its facilities including Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital of Darby, Penn.; Mercy Philadelphia Hospital; and Mercy Suburban Hospital of East Norriton, Penn. These hospitals will use ED PulseCheck for automated ED clinical documentation and decision support, along with Picis LYNX E/Point automated charge capture.
  • Bayonne Medical Center — Bayonne Medical Center in Bayonne, N.J. has contracted for both Picis ED PulseCheck and Picis LYNX E/Point revenue management solution to provide automated order entry, physician and nursing documentation, risk management and First DataBank medication integration, as well as InSight ED.
  • The Reading Hospital and Medical Center — This large southeastern Pennsylvania medical center, which treats in excess of 100,000 patients annually in its 85-bed emergency department, has added both InSight ED – Patient Chart Rules and InSight ED – Charge Rules – Facility to notify busy clinicians when documentation required for charging is either missing or incomplete, as well as, to capture events that facilitate core measures reporting.

Recent Health Systems that Extended Picis to Additional Facilities

  • Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) — In November 2008, Abington Memorial Hospital acquired Lansdale Hospital, a 125-bed, acute care hospital in southeastern Pennsylvania, which provides inpatient and outpatient healthcare services, and includes a 24-hour emergency department. AMH, an existing Picis client, is adding ED PulseCheck to Lansdale Hospital after using the solution since 2007. AMH intends to use ED PulseCheck to help sustain its 9.8 percent increase in volume, as well as improve patient flow with ED PulseCheck’s interoperability with its Eclipsys Corporation HIS.
  • Inova Health System – Inova Health System, one of the largest private healthcare delivery systems in Virginia and the Washington, DC metro region, went live with ED PulseCheck in its first facility in November 2007. In less than a year, Picis had automated nearly 400,000 ED patient visits in the Northern VA area. Recently, the eighth and ninth Inova facilities, Loudoun and Cornwall Hospitals in Leesburg, Va., went live with ED PulseCheck for physician and nursing documentation, patient tracking and risk management of the electronic medical record, while integrating with McKesson for lab results, admissions data, lab and other patient information.
  • Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) - The Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in West Bloomfield, Mich. serves as the fourth Henry Ford facility to implement ED PulseCheck within its emergency department. West Bloomfield followed the same philosophy as Henry Ford Wyandotte, Henry Ford Center for Health Services, and the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital- Warren Campus in adopting Picis’ best practice of implementing all modules on day one. The West Bloomfield ED reported that it currently sees approximately 23,000 patients a year and projects that number could grow to 48,000 in the new department within five years.

“We continue to see an increase in the integration of Picis’ clinical and financial solutions at hospitals nationwide because of anticipated regulatory requirements and the growing need for more accurate revenue capture and precise tracking of billing. In particular, the addition of InSight ED to emergency departments is helping hospitals provide better department management, proactive patient care and increased charge capture,” says Mark D. Crockett, M.D., F.A.C.E.P., President, Picis Emergency Care Division.

Automating more than 30 million patient visits annually in more than 700 hospitals throughout North America, Picis ED solutions help improve hospital operations and increase patient satisfaction in the ED. Picis ED PulseCheck versions 4.0 and 4.1 are Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT®) Certified® 08 Emergency Department Electronic Health Record (EHR) solutions. When integrated seamlessly with Picis LYNX E/Point point-of-care charge capture system, hospitals can be more confident in facility charging and billing accuracy.
