Picis Announces 2010 Customer Recognition Award Winners
Leading hospitals and healthcare systems demonstrate the “Power of Results” generating millions of dollars of new revenue
WAKEFIELD, Mass. — June 15, 2010 —From its installed base of more than 1,800 leading hospitals and health networks globally, Picis announced today the winners of the 2010 Customer Recognition Awards at the 9th Annual Picis Exchange Customer Conference, currently underway in Miami, Fla. Consistent with the conference’s theme of the “Power of Results,” these awards recognize hospitals and healthcare systems using Picis CareSuite™ solutions to support the organization’s clinical, financial and operational performance in the emergency department (ED), operating room (OR) or intensive care unit (ICU), and generating millions of dollars of revenue as a result.
“Prior to our Picis implementation, there was a constant disruption of the flow in our emergency department. Clipboards were everywhere and the bottlenecks would never go away. We are proud of the success we have accomplished with ED PulseCheck and of the outstanding results we have achieved,” said Dr. Neil Meehan, CMIO of Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Mass. “Picis is critical to our ongoing ED strategy and the implementation of our Health Information Exchange (HIE). We look forward to continuing to innovate through our partnership in the future.”
Picis honored the following hospitals and medical centers:
Award Category: Financial and Compliance Excellence
- CHRISTUS Health, Irving, Texas
CHRISTUS Health is made up of 40 hospitals and facilities in six American states and Mexico, and sees more than 750,000 ED visits each year. The healthcare system went live with Picis LYNX™ E/Point® and LYNX C/Point® in early 2009. These solutions have improved the accuracy and compliance of revenue management for emergency services, including infusion and injection services, which are often difficult to document and costly to miss. In just 32 weeks, CHRISTUS trained 800 users and went live in 21 facilities across Texas and Louisiana, achieving increased net revenue of $8.7 million within weeks of implementation.
- Sentara Healthcare, Norfolk, Va.
Sentara Healthcare serves more than two million residents in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina at more than 100 sites, including eight acute care hospitals. Sentara utilizes LYNX’s E/Point solution in its EDs, which see approximately 400,000 visits each year. Since first implementing E/Point in 2002, Sentara reports that it has generated approximately $78.7 million in net incremental revenue and expanded Picis technology to additional facilities across the IDN. This has provided the organization with an average increase of $30 net revenue per patient visit in the ED.
“Implementing E/Point was a vital piece of our ongoing strategy to ensure that we’re accurately recouping revenue and consistently compensated for the care we provide,” said Bert Reese, CIO and Senior Vice President of Sentara Healthcare. “We’re proud to be recognized for our integration of E/Point with Epic Systems Corporation’s software and for the results it has yielded to the health system as a whole.”
Award Category: High-Performance ED
- Lawrence General Hospital, Lawrence, Mass.
Lawrence General Hospital is a community hospital in the Boston-metro region that sees 72,000 ED visits a year. Since implementing Picis ED PulseCheck™ in 2005 as its first electronic health record (EHR) system, the organization has increased efficiency and physician productivity, and eliminated post-shift dictation of patient charts, which alone saves $600,000 a year. In addition, Lawrence General improved the accuracy of clinical documentation, reportedly increased revenue capture by $5 million in the first year, decreased average length of stay in the ED from 190 minutes to 120 minutes and reduced the rate of patients who left without being seen from six to one percent. Lawrence General is also in the process of developing an HIE, which leverages ED PulseCheck and shares critical data across up to 50 EMRs and more than 4,000 community physicians.
- Cape Cod Healthcare, Hyannis, Mass.
Cape Cod Healthcare is comprised of two hospitals with 259 beds. The larger of the two hospitals is Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, which services nearly 90,000 ED patients annually. With 67 percent of Cape Cod Hospital’s admissions coming through its ED, it is a critical point of entry for the hospital and one challenged to handle huge spikes in seasonal volume during summer months. Using the ED PulseCheck emergency department information system (EDIS), Cape Cod Hospital dropped its average waiting room time to 25 minutes or less and reengineered processes to optimize use of the technology. Now 90 percent of patients bypass the waiting room altogether, heading directly to treatment areas where they are seen by clinical staff. The average time to see a physician in Cape Cod’s EDs is less than 35 minutes, and the hospital was recently ranked #1 for patient satisfaction nationally by Press Ganey Associates, Inc. In addition to operational and patient flow improvements, the health system reports that it has decreased its average time-to-bill by six days and generated a $700,000 increase in intravenous medication services revenue with clinical documentation intervention.
Award Category: Patient Satisfaction
- Skagit Valley Hospital, Mount Vernon, Wash.
Skagit Valley Hospital is a 137-bed facility that manages 5,500 OR patients each year. A Picis customer using OR Manager since 2003, Skagit Valley implemented SmarTrack® in 2008 for simplified tracking of patients through the perioperative process. SmarTrack screens are located in the day surgery waiting area, main surgical area, post operative care units (PACU), radiology department and throughout the hospital, enabling staff to proactively manage the flow of patients and resources along key care paths. The hospital has seen improved communication between areas and with staff and family members, and also decreased phone calls per year by 30,000. Skagit has also improved staff scheduling and reduced delayed procedures and cancellations due to the more extensive pre-operative screening process. These improvements have increased patient and staff satisfaction significantly, impacting more than 450 active users of the system, and have increased satisfaction for the patients’ family members by providing up-to-the-minute information to the waiting room.
Award Category: Clinical Excellence
- St. Jude Medical Center, Fullerton, Calif.
St. Jude Medical Center part of the St. Joseph Health System is a 384-bed community hospital with 29 OR suites and treatment rooms. After implementing Picis OR Manager in 2005, the hospital has continued to build out the Picis Total Perioperative Automation suite, adding SmarTrack in 2006 and Anesthesia Manager, Preop Manager and PACU Manager in 2007. By implementing these Picis solutions, St. Jude has achieved the complete automation of its perioperative suite, which provides a streamlined process, enhanced communication and quality reporting from surgical scheduling through surgery and anesthesia to PACU. This enabled St. Jude Medical Center to gain recognition by Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) for being in the top 1.6 percent of the nation’s hospitals effectively using electronic medical records and technology to help benefit patient care.
“Every hospital and health system today needs to be in a position to easily evolve and adjust with the new demands and advancements that healthcare reform will bring. Our 2010 award winners are not only keeping up with innovations in healthcare technology, but are recognized for their leadership in setting the pace for the industry,” said Todd Cozzens, CEO and Vice Chairman of Picis. “Through Picis solutions, these organizations are playing a key role in continuously improving our healthcare system and driving quality patient care.”
